Travel Writer / Take the Family
One of the most prominent travel experts in the UK since she began writing, commissioning and editing for the iconic Time Out guides and magazine in 1997, Rhonda has been commissioned to cover her adventures around the globe for UK national newspapers including The Guardian, The Observer, Metro, The Times, The Telegraph and iPaper.
She has also contributed to major travel publications including National Geographic Traveller, Condé Nast Traveller, and Food and Travel, in-flight magazines, and women’s magazines including Red and Prima, as well as writing for leading guidebook publishers such as Lonely Planet and Fodor’s.
Rhonda’s work, which focuses on immersive experiences, authentic encounters and going behind the scenes of her destination to find the untold stories of everyday people, has taken her to all seven continents and embraced everything from wild camping on Antarctica to gay tango in Buenos Aires.
As one of the UK’s best-known experts on family travel since the birth of her first child in 2002, Rhonda has appeared on Radio 4's Women's Hour and other radio shows to discuss issues around family travel, as well as presenting on family travel at events such as the Family Travel Conference run by the Basque Tourist Agency.
For 17 years she has been Head of Content at the UK’s biggest family travel website, Take the Family. She has also worked as a writer and consultant on travel marketing projects for agencies, companies and brands including Trivago, Travel Counsellors, Atout France, Hauts de France Tourisme, Carrier Luxury Holidays, Stubborn Mule, and P&O Ferries, for whom she was the family travel spokesperson.
She has seen the other side of the industry as a highly effective PR consultant managing the accounts for, and recruiting and running press trips for, clients including Croatia, the Maldives and the French Alps. She speaks fluent French, and commercial and literary translation into English is another string to her bow. She has won prizes for her fiction, too.
These days Rhonda continues to explore the world with her now (mainly) grown-up sons but also has special interests in slow and sustainable travel, over-tourism, train travel, and wellbeing travel beyond the luxury spas (she is a yoga fanatic and is also training to be a consultant in Ayurvedic medicine).
Together with her ‘travel wife’, fellow travel journalist Tracey Davies, Rhonda is the author of Wayward Women (https://www.waterstones.com/book/wayward-women/rhonda-carrier/tracey-
davies/9781835013595), a memoir of two women’s midlife reinvention, female friendship, and the inspiring women that they meet around the world, from Peruvian shamans to climate activists and explorers.
In conjunction with this book, they are working with TellTale Industries to launch in autumn 2025 a podcast sharing their experiences around the world. It will include penetrating interviews with some of the fascinating women they meet on their travels, from modern-day mermaids to Mormon wives.
Rhonda actively collaborates with the likes of Women in Travel CIC, Intrepid Travel and the TUI Foundation on women’s empowerment and social change through travel, which is her major passion.
Their long friendship, shared experiences, personal chemistry and Tracey’s stand-up comedy background make she and Rhonda a compelling double act for speaking on issues surrounding women’s travel, including solo adventures, women’s safety while travelling, and women’s empowerment. But they are also powerful speakers in their own right.
With the data from the travel industry showing a huge upswing in female travel, including solo and midlife/late-life travel, Rhonda and Tracey can speak eloquently and humorously of their lifelong experiences in travelling solo and with other women, and of their encounters with other women doing the same.
Passionate about inspiring women to go out and travel the globe, they are fascinating repositories of tales about the incredible women they meet from different cultures, from Buddhist nuns in Bali to Native American storytellers and activists.
